These courses are a revision of the Institute's plumbing courses DD08T and DF10L. The Certificate course aims to develop the student's skills and knowledge to the level of a journeyman plumber and to provide the prerequisite skills for entry into further study leading to licensing. To be eligible for the award of Certificate in Gas Shielded Arc Welding students must complete all six modules (ie three from each stream). To be eligible for the awards of Statement of Attainment in Gas Tungsten Arc Welding or Gas Metal Arc Welding students must successfully complete all three modules in the relevant stream of study. This amended course aims to prepare students for their role as tradespersons in the occupation by providing a broad base of knowledge and skills in automotive vehicles together with specialist studies in road transport, earthmoving and agricultural machinery. Areas covered include operation and fault diagnosis, service, repair and maintenance.

The course will provide students with both broadly based work skills and specialist skills which will enhance their prospects of job advancement and occupational mobility. The common core will permit students to transfer between the automotive mechanical trade courses.

The course is designed to train apprentices and to complement employer/apprentice training in practical and theoretical aspects of panel beating. It is also designed to provide industry with panel beating tradespersons who have the necessary skills, knowledge, safe practices and attitudes to maintain high standards, to promote the trade and to be able to adapt to technological changes in industry.

This course is designed to provide training for people who intend to work as welders in light or heavy metal fabrication occupations. It meets the National Metal and Engineering competency standards for a person working at the C10/General Service Officer 5 level (ASF 3) in Specialisation Band A in Fabrication.

All students who have completed an Australian Capital Territory Year 10 Certificate or equivalent may apply for entry to the course. The Canberra Institute of Technology policy on recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) will apply. Show less
