The general principles of advocacy for the intellectually disabled are outlined, as well as types of advocacy currently in use. Self-advocacy and the antecedents of the growing self-advocacy movement overseas are discussed, and relevant references and literature are incorporated. This report includes: (1) statistical information concerning intellectually disabled enrolled in adult education units; (2) information on individual centres; (3) results of interviews with adults attending the centres; (4) outlines of organisational models in use in the United States of America; and (5) recommendations. The report is accompanied by a loose leaf folder titled ‘Speaking out: self advocacy for use in developing self advocacy skills’. Show less
