The intention of this report is to present an overview of youth related human services delivery, the type of training that is currently offered to equip people for employment in the field, and training options that it may be appropriate for TAFE in Victoria to pursue. The report is the result of investigations carried out during 1984 by the Research and Development Department, the Curriculum Support Unit, and the Training Service Department at Preston College of TAFE with the support of a Particular Purpose Grant shared with Gordon Technical College, Geelong. In discussions with the Gordon College, it was decided that the Geelong project would have a specific and regional training orientation, whilst the Preston Project should attempt a broader view of training needs within a wider interpretation of youth related human services. The methodological approach has been to collect existing recent research reports about the ‘Youth Welfare’ field and related areas and to attempt a synthesis of research findings. Open interviews with key personnel in welfare education, welfare professional associations, policy administrators and the employment of 'Youth Welfare’ personnel were conducted in order to develop an impressionistic picture of the ‘Youth Welfare’ field.
