Abstract |
This guide is intended as a resource for teacher educators in designing and organising their programmes. It is based on recent research and development from NRDC and elsewhere, plus interviews with teacher educators who have developed programmes with strong integration of theory and practice as well as of subject specific and pedagogical knowledge. For example, it reviews different models of teaching practice, partnerships in which organisations with different expertise encourage each other’s development, and best practice in assessing teaching practice, including formative and summative assessment. [The chapters are as follows]: Introduction; Theory and practice; The organisation of teaching practice: group teaching practice; paired teaching practice; individual teaching practice; How to organise group teaching practice or ‘training groups’; More than just teaching: opportunities for observation; ‘Practise as you preach’: the role of modelling; Putting it all together; Innovative partnership arrangements; Methods of assessing teaching practice; Formative and summative assessment. Included as appendices are: Examples of job descriptions for teaching practice mentors; Examples of timetables for teaching practice groups; Example teaching practice feedback record sheet.
