Abstract
This report describes teaching strategies and their impact upon the progress of a selected sample of students and teachers in the United Kingdom. Most classes are located in further education (FE) colleges with an average teaching session of just under two hours and average attendance of eight learners. In summary, 250 learners are assessed and 243 completed attitude surveys. Researchers use observation and interviews with students and teachers supported by access to background material. Findings suggest that there is a link between a positive attitude towards numeracy and attending a course, especially for older students. A diversity of learners, contexts and length of time in acquiring skills means that flexibility is required by teachers. There is a range of teaching strategies but whole class and individual work are most common. A high degree of subject and pedagogical knowledge, and also subject-specific pedagogical knowledge is required by teachers. More research is needed to acquire information about learner and teacher identities and how their attitudes and settings influence their interaction with numeracy learning and teaching.
