Working with communication, language, literacy and numeracy needs in workplace training and assessment: a support resource for workplace trainers and assessors in the utilities, electrotechnology and lift industries

This resource which has been developed for the utilities, electrotechnology and lift industries, aims to raise awareness of the role and importance of communication, language, literacy and numeracy (CLLN) skills in workplace training and assessment in relation to competency-based training and the implementation of national training packages. It also aims to develop relevant skills for workplace trainers and assessors to help them respond appropriately to CLLN issues as they arise during training. Sections cover: - an introduction to 'Breakthrough!' - the implementation guide for the national communication strategy for the utilities, electrotechnology and lift industries - the importance of CLLN skills and training in the workplace - working with the units of competency as detailed in the industry's training package - planning and implementing training in the workplace - planning and conducting assessment in the workplace. The resource takes trainers through a detailed breakdown of a number of units, examining the underpinning skills, including embedded language literacy and communication skills in the performance criteria for each element prescribed. They encourage trainers to determine if the language and literacy skills required are critical to the successful performance of the competency and to ensure that any training implemented targets the development of these skills alongside the vocational skills and that the assessment task developed also shows the trainees ability to fulfil the communication requirements at an appropriate level.
