This document, produced for use in the utilities, electrotechnology and lift industries, aims to describe the concept of mentoring, and suggests processes to follow when introducing a mentoring program into the workplace. It defines mentoring as a process where a less experienced employee (mentoree) is paired with a more senior or experienced employee (the mentor) in order to develop new skills or to enhance career pathways. Sections cover: - how mentoring relates to 'Breakthrough!' - the implementation guide for the national communication strategy for the Utilities, Electrotechnology and Lift Industries - benefits and uses of mentoring - planning and implementing a mentoring scheme - stages and processes involved - evaluating and trouble shooting. Coordinators are advised to follow six stages in establishing a mentor program which include making sure participants are voluntary and that they understand the principles of adult learning, ensuring that the mentors and mentorees are aware of the desirable qualities for successful participation in a mentor program, matching mentors and mentorees, provide training for all those involved and finally provide support and on-going evaluation of the program.
