Project 21C describes the vision of the current Government of Western Australia (WA) for learning in the 21st century with the intention that WA, the state with the nation’s fastest growing economy, will become the nation’s best educated, most highly skilled state. This document focuses on how the WA government is working across sectors, including schools, TAFE WA and universities, to develop an education and training system which is more flexible and relevant, and which will encourage people to engage in lifelong learning. The 2003/2004 WA State Budget continues to focus on priority areas in education and training including increasing retention rates, creating better learning environments, increasing the number of apprenticeships and traineeships, and developing better information technology. Key initiatives in the area of vocational education and training (VET) include: more training places; expanded job placement services; a mature employment program focusing on the employment needs of people aged 45 years and over; and greater numbers of apprenticeships, traineeships and school-based apprenticeships.
