This presentation lists the various aspects of biotechnology and its impact on areas such as agriculture and food, disease diagnosis, drug discovery and environmental management. It outlines that, with the ageing population and more active lifestyles, there will be a demand for more health related biotechnology, and that a regulatory framework will be necessary. In the area of drug discovery for example, the reality is that it is very expensive and time consuming and future challenges will lie with how to meet productivity. Ways of meeting this challenge include using multidisciplinary teams, working around the clock and around the world, and using new methodologies.
