Partnerships for business, work and ageing: the business challenges of a shifting age demographic

On average we have been granted twenty years of additional life over the last eighty years but we are yet to develop models that relate this gain to work. From an individual and organisational perspective we are bonded to cultures, structures and systems that result in the departure from work or casualisation for most of us during our fifties. The linear career path may be acknowledged as a remnant of a past era, however individual expectations and organisational structures still reflect traditional pathways. This presentation outlines how business experience in Australia provides insight into the dynamics that will challenge the future approaches to managing what will become an increasingly aged workforce. These include learning and development practices, managing health and safety in an era of ageing, extending the productive working life of individuals, employee retention, and career management.
