The major issues facing every society, developed and developing, fall into five categories: (1) productivity and innovation: the impact of disruptive technologies; (2) sustainability: social and environmental; (3) equity: within and between societies; (4) wellbeing: the contribution of good work to good lives; and (5) formality: the relationship between paid and unpaid labour. The right strategy for each category is far from fixed, but globalisation and the changes it brings demand often radical shifts in our understanding of them, and the ways in which we balance them together. This presentation will illustrate the practical meaning of each issue, and pose some of the questions which might lead to successful responses.
