This paper was prepared for the Curriculum Research and Development section of the Department of TAFE and examines some of the aspects of the recognition of prior learning (RPL) relating them to the TAFE curriculum. With the focus on the use of RPL for academic recognition, existing and proposed models for RPL are reviewed and some of the key issues identified. These models include the TAFE model, the Broadmeadows College model and the Joondalup model, based on the open learning concept. Certain qualities are suggested that the curriculum must possess if the prior learning of students is to be recognised in a realistic manner.
