Review of the International Fibre Centre

The International Fibre Centre (IFC) was established in Geelong in 1997 with the intention to support the development of skills within the Australian fibres and textiles industry. In December 1999 a preliminary analysis conducted by the Office of Post Compulsory Education, Training and Employment revealed significant budgetary and operational problems with the IFC. After detailed desktop research and extensive consultations, this review found that the IFC, in its present form is not financially sustainable either in the short or long term. The review recommends that the Brunswick facility in Melbourne continue operations in its current form and the Geelong plant be redeveloped in collaboration with the CSIRO, the Commonwealth Government, industry and training providers to reduce duplication of effort and to reap the benefits of a cooperative approach on behalf of the wool and textiles industries.
