The purpose of the evaluation of the Advanced Certificate in Residential and Community Services and its delivery in an open learning format was to investigate student experiences during the course. The respondent group of 21 will complete their studies in 1993. The evaluation instruments included a written questionnaire and telephone interviews. The results demonstrated that open learning had provided the respondent group with access to training from which they would otherwise have been excluded. Student perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses of the course and the importance of various support structures were investigated and recommendations for change were made. These recommendations include: weekend workshops, teleconferencing and study groups should be encouraged and supported, access to tutors must be improved (eg: voice mail, answering machines, electronic mail) and a benchmark for maximum delay in assignment returns should be established.
