TAFE and basic life skills

The four chapters in this document offer one person’s reflections on the need in TAFE for education and training in basic life skills. It is argued in chapter 1 that TAFE is by its very nature reactive, in spite of persistence calls for it to become proactice. it is part of the philosophy of TAFE to serve the needs of industry - a reactive purpose. TAFE needs a proactice charter, one which will guide and stimulate the future development and provision of education. Chapter 2 looks at the area of generic skills in Canada and the United Kingdom and tries to clarify what is meant by generic skills research and to identify some of its implications for TAFE. Chapter 3 is a collection of notes on a variety of themes, relating to the types of topics the author believes may be important when preparing for the development of a basic life skills program. the last chapter considers the identification of some related issues and their importance in TAFE.
