Examining technical education and teachers' preparation in Jordan: implications for career and technical education in the United States

Jordan is a country that has attempted to move its economy from an agriculture-based economy that depends on foreign aid to a light-industry economy. Vocational and technical education [VTE] have become a priority in the Jordanian education system. In the United States (US), the concept of career and technical education (CTE) began in the 19th century with the demand for growth in and development of the US workforce. The authors provide a general overview of vocational education in Jordan and CTE in the US. The article begins with a look at the structure of Jordan's educational system, general system of education, higher education, and VTE. This is followed by a description of the current preparation of vocational/technical teachers (VTTs) and future challenges in vocational education and training and an empirical perspective of VTE in Jordan.
