Qualitative career assessment is described as informal and requiring a proactive role for the client in the assessment process. Common forms include card sorts, timelines and genograms. This chapter provides a brief outline of the history of qualitative career assessment and its development and use. Some common instruments are described and their advantages and disadvantages for qualitative career assessment discussed. The author suggests that despite their limited profile in the career guidance literature, these methods enable career counsellors to broaden their range of options to meet the more complex needs of an increasingly diverse client group.
