Career maturity assessment in an international context

This chapter explores the measurement of career maturity within the cultures in which it is applied. The first part of the chapter looks at the historical developemnt of career maturity and its assessment. The second part describes the change in context and focuses on the transfer of career maturity from its westernised, middle-class, modernist beginnings into multicultural, post-modern contexts. Issues of cultural relativity, cultural validity, cultural specificity, and psychometric issues associated with conceptual equivalence are raised. The author concludes by considering how career maturity and its assessment will need to adapt to serve the current context within which individual career development occurs.
