This chapter examines career guidance for young people at risk of social exclusion as a result of leaving education early and experiencing a combination of short-term, unskilled employment and periods of unemployment. The author begins by defining the terms used when considering the issues for career guidance for this group, and discussing the focus on inclusion. A constructivist framework is introduced and the relevance of motivational, outcomes-focused and narrative-based approaches within this context is explored. A move to narrative thinking as a way to construct a direction forward for face-to-face, career guidance work with young people at risk is advocated.
