This article suggest that lifelong learning for sustainable development is the most important task for European societies today and into the future. It looks at sustainable development from the perspectives of political leadership and individual responsibility. It looks at the role of UNESCO in developing the concept of education for sustainable development (ESD), and at some of the programs intended to support this. Looking at education from early childhood through to higher education and beyond, a role may be found for ESD at each stage. Finally, some successful ESD programs are described.
