The impact and effectiveness of positive action: programs in the learning and skills sector: a summary of a participant survey, 2007

The Network for Black Professionals (NBP) has worked in partnership with the Centre for Excellence in Leadership (CEL) for a number of years to develop a coherent portfolio of 'positive action' programs designed to support the career development of black minority ethnic (BME) staff working in the learning and skills sector. This participant survey was designed as a 'snapshot' of both the perception of these partnership programs but also of their impact upon the actual career progression of participants. 260 participants were invited to complete the survey. The survey represents a significant evaluative study of the impact of positive action leadership and career development programs offered in the learning and skills sector. It endorses the value of such programs from the perspective of participants. It also offers evidence of the very positive impact such programs are having upon the career progression of BME participants. The survey elucidates the way in which the programs are contributing to the aspirations of BME professionals to achieve their career potential and how they are aiding their professional development. The survey also clearly demonstrates that positive action programs delivered by the NBP are of high quality and are valued by BME colleagues in the sector.
