This paper argues for and presents an illustrative case study of the progressive qualitative research methods proposed by Holliday. The illustrative case study is a study of teachers' conceptions of teaching in some vocational high schools in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The study, which attempts to construct and interpret teacher's narrative descriptions of their teaching, is a participation-based research project, since it gives room for teachers to reveal meanings based on their own stories or narratives. This narrative inquiry allows the researcher to go beyond what is said and done by the participants, which finally helps the analysis to arrive at a detailed description. It offers the opportunity for the researcher to be unrestricted and more ingenious in examining a particular occupational group. The research method adopted in the study resulted in some sognificant points which may contribute to the progress of research movements, to down-to-earth research results, to policy making, and especially to the development of emancipatory empowerment, autonomy and independence in government.
