Apprenticeship training in Pakistan: a comparative study of apprenticeship practices in Punjab and European countries

In this era of global competition, human resources will play a decisive role in the battle for efficiency and competitive advantage. Access to and maintenance of skilled human resources will be of equal importance as access to capital or changing technology. The quickest and most reliable source of providing skilled workers is vocational education and training (VET), in particular apprenticeship training, with its mixture of on-and off-the-job training. Despite Pakistan having had apprenticeship training for decades, it is lagging behind. This study is aimed at gathering and synthesising factual data related to apprenticeship training in the Punjab province of Pakistan. The data will then be used to develop a comparative analysis of apprenticeship training in Pakistan and in European countries: Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, Italy, England and Ireland. It is hoped that the outcomes of the study will help theorists and policy makers in Pakistan better understand the dynamics of apprenticeship training and formulate appropriate strategies for its development and improvement.
