This chapter describes research undertaken in Canada to develop the sustainable development competency profile for the workforce using integrative literature reviews and expert consultations. The profile developed by this study consists of six unifying themes which address the essential knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for the workforce to apply the principles of sustainable development to their day-to-day activities. These themes are: ethics and values, integrated decision making, responsible use of resources, valuing diversity, safety and well being, and continual improvement. The themes are also broadly applicable to general education, adult education and technical and vocational education and training (TVET).
