This paper examines how leaders in further education colleges undertake change. Drawing upon research carried out for the Centre for Excellence in Leadership and relating this to the change literature (e.g. Dawson 1994, 2003; Lewin 2000; Pettigrew 1985), a provisional model or pathway of change processes is proposed for discussion and debate. Our model is introduced and the 'internal processes of change' identified are explored. In a second paper (Bailey et al, 2006) we expand upon the idea of 'external behavioural influences'; the activities identified which both support and inhibit the process of change.
