Institutional embodiment and visibility

This paper is about the under-representation of black and minority ethnic (BME) people on boards of governors of further education [FE] colleges. It is situated within the context of recent legislative changes to improve the representation of BME people in governing bodies and senior management within the FE sector. Using data from interviews with white and BME governors, I explore how exclusion continues to operate within FE colleges and some of the ways in which they are reproduced as white institutions.
