Queensland's smart future, 2008-2012

The 'Smart state strategy' is the Queensland government's policy to create a 'smart state', where knowledge, creativity and innovation can flourish. The strategy for 2008 to 2012 represents a change in direction for the government's smart state investment program. Over the last decade, the government has invested strongly in education and training reforms, research and development infrastructure and broadening the state's industry base (see 'Smart Queensland: smart state strategy 2005-2015', indexed at TD/LMR 86.13). The aim is to build on this foundation through investment in human resources to make the most of the state's research infrastructure. The highlight of the 2008 strategy is a trebling of investment in people, for example, by attracting and retaining some of the best minds in science and industry through the Innovation Skills Fund and attracting leading clinical researchers via the Health and Medical Research Program.
