Integrating new literacies into classroom practice: an action research project

With the profusion of communication technologies and electronic texts, literacy can no longer be defined in psychological, cognitive and school-based terms. As the author explains, literacy is no longer a paper-based set of discrete skills to be applied across a variety of contexts. This article describes an action research project undertaken at Upper Yarra Community House about new literacies in the classroom that focused on students' own home and out-of-school literacies. The goals of the project were to: generate discussion in the classroom around the practice, domains and events of new literacies; improve skills and engagement of students in literacy tasks; and produce a digital resource that will inform and assist teachers to integrate new literacies into the classroom. Findings include: the majority of students were enthusiastic about the activities; reluctant learners contributed to classroom discussion and participated for the first time in literacy exercises; and many students delighted in teaching the teachers their skills and sharing their knowledge.
