The supporting research program complements the Commission's core functions of conducting public inquiries and studies commissioned by the Government. The main objectives of the self-initiated, supporting research program are to provide high quality, policy relevant information, analysis and advice to governments and the community. The Commission's supporting research program over the next two years will include work on: productivity and its determinants; environmental and resource management; labour markets (including education); and development of economic models and frameworks to aid the analysis of policies and trends, and of impediments to sustained improvements in living standards. The Commission has an on-going mandate to contribute to the understanding of productivity and its determinants. The supporting research program will continue to emphasise the sustainability of productivity improvements, including environmental and social aspects. This is designed to complement the Commission's major reports into ageing, and on the prospective effects of the National Reform Agenda.
