Skills for South Australia: building on strong foundations: September 2006

More than $400 million is invested each year in South Australia in skills and employment development programs to meet the State's workforce needs. Addressing skill shortages is not just about training. It is important to have strategies that increase workforce participation, develop new approaches to recruitment, and enhance the attractiveness of industries, working conditions and new attitudes towards retirement. This package of 24 new skills initiatives builds on the strong foundations of the State's education and training system and targets specific government resources in partnership with industry to meet the rapid jobs growth and skills demand in the mineral resources, defence and construction industries. These initiatives include funding for 2,600 additional apprenticeships and traineeships. The new initiatives focus on seven priorities: 1. Growing prosperity - responding to the skill needs of major projects; 2. Expanding opportunity - increasing and improving workforce participation; 3. Developing a skilled workforce; 4. Increasing science and mathematics in schools; 5. Increasing skilled migration; 6. Improving workforce planning and information; and 7. Fostering career development.
