Year 12 schooling and the apprenticeship training contract

This paper analyses the impact of schooling on the risk of cancellation from formal apprenticeship training contracts. The analysis is limited to persons aged 15 to 24 that signed a formal apprenticeship training contract in the traditional trade occupations during 2001. The analysis seeks to quantify the impact the additional two years of schooling involved in moving from year 10 to year 12 has on reducing the risk of cancellation from an apprenticeship training contract. Results of this study indicate completion of year 12 can reduce the likelihood of cancellation by around 13 to 15 percentage points compared to year 10 completers. Further, this effect is found to be independent of the maturity, or age, of the apprentice.
