There is a growing demand in the US, UK, Australia and Canada for the field of adult literacy and basic education to professionalize. Adult literacy and basic education is largely taught by part-time teachers and volunteer tutors. These 'unqualified' practitioners could be required to obtain some form of adult education certification as has already happened in 12 American states. Various interpretations of what professionalism means are described, as are ways in which such professionalism may occur.
