Coming to terms with prior learning assessment

Prior learning assessment (PLA) is described and the forces that shape it in higher education are identified. PLA is discussed from the standpoint of the Canadian university community and from the adult student perspectives. Key concerns for the university community are summarised. Conclusions reached include that PLA can work well for a selected group of adult students and that portfolio development is arduous and time-consuming but beneficial.
