In Canada, as throughout the world, social and economic policy is being shaped with the explicit goal of promoting human capital and the knowledge economy. The key to the economy is the acquisition of new knowledge through education and learning. This chapter considers the meaning of 'human capital', the macro-economic value of knowledge, economics and social responsibility, and the implications for work and employment.
