Learning is deliberate and requires effort. It results in a change of practice. However, it does not necessary result from formalised learning activities but from our everyday reflective practice. This paper, which is based on my recently completed PhD research, suggests that our ability to learn from our experiences can be enhanced through the use of a metaphoric framework. This framework enables us to deliberately focus on key aspects of our experience in context and to make meaning from what is occurring about us. The framework can be used by individuals, by work teams, or any other group, in order to make sense of situations and occurrences in order to improve their practice. The framework also challenges concepts of learning transfer and generalisation, using recent work by Van Oers (1998) and Beach (1999; 2003) to underpin the perceptions of 108 training practitioners as to how we transform our learning when we cross work contexts.
