This research was undertaken on behalf of [the National Centre for Vocational Education Research] NCVER by [Judith Miralles & Associates] JM&A in partnership with the University of Ballarat and looked at the role of multicultural community organisations in enhancing the English language, literacy and employability skills of recently arrived refugees in Australia. The research looked at the role of multicultural community organisations as surrogate English language and work skills learning organisations for three refugee groups. Through the experiences of refugees from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iraq and Sudan, the study explored the role played by multicultural community organisations in creating what we believed were important informal networks and learning spaces connecting people from refugee backgrounds to the wider Australian community. In this presentation, I will be taking you through some of the more interesting findings from our research. In line with our initial research purpose, I will be focussing on the organisational practices of multicultural community organisations and what we found to enhance refugee literacy, language and employability. I have broken it up into the following four main areas: Section one, 'Key messages'; Section two, 'Methodology'; Section three, 'Refugee experience/Transition points'; and Section four, 'Organisational practices & Learning related success factors'.
