A review of the literature suggests that to meet the needs and changing expectations of contemporary students, Queensland vocational and educational training (VET) teachers need to capitalise on the use of technology for learning and teaching. Although online learning has made major advances in recent years, web conferencing could make a significant contribution to learning and teaching. This paper outlines preliminary findings of the first stage of a work-in-progress study of the utilisation of web conferencing in the VET sector. The overall study will identify and analyse the perceptions, expectations and practical experiences of 12 to 15 VET teachers and approximately 90 students across a range of vocational training areas relating to the use of web conferencing for learning and teaching. The overall research study comprises three phases - preparation, planning and a three-month implementation. Phase one has been completed, phase two is in progress and phase three will begin in mid-July 2007. Teacher and student perceptions and expectations of the potential use of this technology, barriers and implications for teaching and learning will be examined.
