This paper discusses the fact that the National Centre for Vocational and Educational Research (NCVER) has lost its funding for adult literacy and numeracy research, which was the only targeted funding for adult literacy and numeracy in Australia, and suggests that one of a number of possible wide-ranging ramifications will be the reduction of a valuable research base that has informed policy and the ongoing development of improved practice. The author gives an overview of the research that has been published by NCVER between 2005 and 2006, categorising the projects into: Good practice; Professional development; Workplace research; Innovative and exploratory work; and Social capital. Conclusions include that NCVER research has provided solid and innovative research in areas of interest to literacy practitioners, program managers, academics and workers in a broad range of social domains in the work they do and their quest to improve outcomes for students and clients.
