This conference was held at the Red Centre Resort in Alice Springs on 15-19 February 1992. The executive committee of the Rural Education Research Association wished to ensure specific conference outcomes, through a largely workshop format. The tasks of the workshops were to: (1) Define research needs within each workshop topic; (2) Identify the researchers required to conduct that research; (3) Determine the most appropriate locations to undertake that research; and (4) Identify a strategy and a source for obtaining funds. The workshops were supplemented by a number of keynote addresses. Keynote addresses included: Conference opening / Shane Stone; Education equity and the crisis in the rural community / Warren Snowdon; The viability of rural towns: an appraisal of the role of public and private sectors in sustainable rural town development / Philippa Hudson; Quantifying access to services in remote and rural Australia / Dennis Griffith; Delivering education services in rural Australia / Geoff Spring. Support papers included: Rural education and the beginning teacher / Andrew Higgins; The remote aboriginal education project / Peter Jones; Teacher satisfaction and community action: improving education in rural and remote schools / Don Squires; Economic rationalisation and the rural crisis / Jack Walton; the Northern Territory Primary Assessment Program / Huang Zheng Sen and Pascale Dixon; rates of teacher turnover in rural locations / Paul Loney; Creativity in crisis / Glenn Roff; Post compulsory education and training opportunities for rural Australia / Doug Lloyd; Multimedia information system in support of learning / Graeme Sawyer. Details of 14 rural education research proposals are appended.
