Report from reference group: national strategy to enhance the status of vocational education and training

This report reflects an overall view of the Reference Group that young people's attitudes to the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector, and TAFE in particular, are not so much due to an image problem but due to real problems with the VET sector systems. Members of the Group consider that the product needs to be improved before marketing strategies are applied. This report therefore focuses on real, structural barriers top young people selecting VET as a first choice, rather than strategies to improve the image of the system. The Group drew upon existing reports, surveys and other material relevant to the topic. Considered and addressed was: The perceptions of, and attitudes to, vocational education and training by young people and their parents and teachers; and The barriers, that can nationally be rectified by governments, VET authorities and other parties, which make VET less attractive and less accessible to young people that other post-school options. Twenty three recommendations are made in four categories: (1) VET sector environment; (2) Flexibility and attitudes of the education sectors; (3) Accessibility and equity of VET; and (4) Information dissemination to the community.
