Historically, emphasis has been placed on the creative individual; however, increasing attention is being paid to creativity and innovation by groups of people. While drawing on the collective experience of people with varied backgrounds and experience may be facilitate creativity and innovation, how this occurs has not been studied extensively. This paper describes a phenomenological study conducted to explore the authors' experience in a creative venture on which they collaborated. Authors were individually interviewed, and then the authors engaged in dialogue about the three interview transcripts. This meeting was also transcribed and analysed. Themes from the four transcripts were then identified, noteworthy themes including (a) creating and maintaining a safe space for dialogue, (b) allowing ideas to be jointly-owned, (c) constructing a particular way of being together, (d) allowing for unpredictability of results, (e) placing value on humour in relationships, and (f) demonstrating a desire to be influenced by others. Themes that emerged resonate with collaborative learning literature. This study demonstrated the benefit of practising collaborative learning during this creative process and, perhaps, its value for other similar ventures.
