An analysis of problems, issues and trends in the provision of lifelong learning: lessons learned

This final chapter draws on the various conceptual, analytic and empirical studies presented in this book to highlight the major lessons learnt which present some of the key issues that need to be dealt with in developing integrated and coherent policies and programs to achieve the goals of lifelong learning for all. They are: the need for well-articulated, inclusive and value-based policies of lifelong learning; the need for a whole community approach; the need to understand and promote conditions under which people participate and learn; the need to overcome barriers and develop strategies for participation by people who are not accessing lifelong learning; the need to reconceptualise provision through multi-agency networks and articulated pathways; and the need for further conceptual, analytic and empirical work.
