The focus of this chapter is on lifelong learning from the perspective of Generation X, those born between 1960-1980 and who are caught between the baby boomers and adolescents and young adults. The author suggests that members of Generation X do not have the same influence as baby boomers on how discussions on lifelong learning proceed and have been further disempowered by public policy that emphasises the commodification of learning and work. He argues that ‘the search for meaning amongst Generation X is shaped by factors such as the lack of adherence to a meta-narrative in culture that is well described by the constraints of postmodernism’ and that a key challenge is to move the discussion on lifelong learning ‘toward a view that engages Generation X in the search to become more critical and reflecting members of an open society’.
