Men’s learning in small and remote towns in Australia

This chapter is based on a series of research projects, undertaken by the author in Australia in 2002-04, on the ways in which men in small rural towns do and don’t return to learn. It summarises the evidence from some of these studies and places them within the context of the nature of men’s learning and their learning preferences. The chapter highlights the fact that just because men do not tend to use adult and community education (ACE) does not mean that men are not learning. The key negative issue identified in the chapter is that men who have had the least positive formal learning experiences are the most at risk and less likely to come to embrace any form of formal learning.
