This publication investigates the social practice of literacy, numeracy and language and its implications for teaching and learning adult basic skills. It demonstrates how the social practice approach to teaching and learning can be used to develop more 'inclusive views' of adult literacy, numeracy and language. It considers a variety of means by which social practice approaches may be applied to key issues of policy and program implementation in the UK and beyond. The first chapter, Introduction: social practice of adult literacy, numeracy and language', is by Mary Hamilton, Yvonne Hillier and Lyn Tett. Section one, 'Literacies as situated social practice', contains the following chapters: Significance of a social practice view of language, literacy and numeracy / David Barton; How could a socio-cultural approach to literacy, language and numeracy inform policy? / Ursula Howard; Adult literacies and social inclusion: practice, research and policy in Scotland / Lyn Tett. Section two, 'Literacy, language and multilingualism', contains the following chapters: Aligning socio-cultural and critical approaches to multilingual literacy research / Elsa Auerbach; Language, literacy and bilingualism: connecting theory, policy and practice / Celia Roberts; Literacy, language and bilingualism / Mahendra Verma. Section three, 'The politics of numbers', contains the following chapters: Power of numbers: research agendas in a number-saturated world / Mike Baynham; Social-cultural approach to adult numeracy: issues for policy and practice / Diana Coben; Measuring up: practitioners researching numeracy / Mark Baxter, Eamonn Leddy, Liz Richards, Alison Tomlin, Topo Wresniwiro. Section four, 'Measuring and assessing adult literacy, numeracy and language', contains the following chapters: Education for all: globalization of learning targets / Harvey Goldstein; Tests and ptarmigan / Peter Lavender; Performance measurement within adult literacy, language and numeracy: practitioners' perspectives / Jay Derrick.
