The success of the Northern Region's economy is based upon its people. This has been particularly important in recent years as traditional industries have slimmed down or disappeared and new industries and opportunitues have developed. The role of training in this process is crucial as new skills have to be acquired and traditional skills converted or updated. This review describes the outcomes of a number of collaborative projects run in Northern region. The projects involve training providers and employers working together on a variety of skill shortage areas and training issues and finding solutions to problems/difficulties they were encountering. Projects in this review covered three broad areas of activity: surveys, consultancy and course development. The authorities involved included the following: the Great Britain Department of Employment Development Unit, and the Training and Enterprise Councils of County Durham, Northumberland, Tyneside, Wearside and Teesside.
