Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to identify the key characteristics of the perceptual capacities experts use to analyze events and make decisions. Design/methodology/approach - The paper is a research review and summary. Findings - The paper finds that the four keys to expert perception are: focus on events and factors most relevant to performance, draw inferences from observations, be attuned to the atypical, and critically analyze the events observed. Practical implications - The paper identifies the steps necessary for analyzing events and making decisions like an expert. Originality/value - The study offers cutting-edge findings on a key characteristic necessary for developing expert performers.
