UK demographics are changing and employees want to be able to work in different ways as their responsibilities change, i.e. not to stop making a contribution to the economy but to make a different one at different times. People are looking to their employers and the government to provide a working climate that enables them to make changes without impacting on their career success or their earnings potential. This report examines the implications of changing demographics for the labour market and the way in which people work. It draws on a survey commissioned by the Work Foundation and undertaken by IFF Research with 1000 adults aged 16 years and over during September 2004. Respondents were surveyed on their views about a range of issues associated with work practices such as working hours, support for flexible working, ideal career structures, gender and generation perspectives on career structure, and employer and government roles in responding to the repercussions of these changes for the labour market. The report presents the findings of the survey, examining whether there are differences between men and women, between different generations and across sectors and industries. Most importantly, it attempts to show how the changing demographics of the UK population could affect individuals, employers and policymakers over the next two decades.
