This paper outlines some of the critical challenges for the UK government over the next five years. Key to the argument is the case that work must be reinstated as a central element in political arena. It identifies the key policy questions that need to be addressed to ensure a better working environment for all. The goal of the paper is to convince political parties and policymakers in the UK to give quality of work a prominent place on their policy agenda and to ‘develop a more coherent view about regulation and performance’. The most urgent challenges currently facing employers and employees are identified, including: globalisation; the ageing of the population; improving organisational performance; the decline in flexibility and security at work; enhancing employment opportunities and labour force participation for all those who want to work; and improving the gender wage gap and social mobility. ‘Good work’ and its link to productivity are defined and suggestions are offered as to how government can encourage it.
