The objectives of the 'Recognition of experience and prior learning in rural industry' project were to: isolate a range of key skills relating to competencies in farm operation and management; develop appropriate systems for the assessment of competencies; identify a range of farm operators and managers to undertake assessment; and assess a trial group. This report is the final report of the project. It documents and evaluates the methodologies used to assess the experience and prior learning of a group of New South Wales (NSW) farmers and makes a series of recommendations relating to assessment methodologies and their implications. The methods used were: challenge tests; portfolio with interview; case study with interview; and on-the-job assessment. The contents are: Executive summary; Introduction to the project: recognition of experience and prior learning in rural industry; Isolating key skills and developing the assessment strategies; Recruiting the target group of farmers to undergo assessment; The assessment strategies and their evaluation; Recommendations specific to R.P.L.: policies, procedures, methodologies and resource needs; Recommendations arising from the project for agricultural educators, farmers' associations and rural industry. Included as appendices are: Definition of terms; Glossary of abbreviations and acronyms; Membership of the benchmarks sub-committee; Membership of the women's sub-committee; R.P.L. bibliography.
